What the duck is produsage?
Produsage is defined as the type of user-led content creation that takes place in a variety of online environments such as Wikipedia. User-led content creation today takes place in a wide variety of online environments. These range from widely distributed, loose and ad hoc networks of participants (such as the blogosphere) to more centralised sites of collaborative work (such as the Wikipedia).
This weeks reading by Dr Axel Bruns suggests that the “concept of produsage as a model of describing today’s emerging user-led content creation environments. Produsage overcomes some of the systemic problems associated with translating industrial-age ideas of content production into an informational-age, social software, Web 2.0 environment. Instead, it offers new ways of understanding the collaborative content creation and development practices found in contemporary informational environments”.
Put very simply, citizen journalism is when private individuals do essentially what professional reporters do – report information. That information can take many forms, I am distributing and controlling this blog right now over the internet. We are all citizen journalists. This opens up new avenues for creative work and publication beyond the traditional media industries.
Never before have so many people had the means to document and self-publish their daily experiences. Citizen journalists across the globe contribute hugely to news especially on YouTube, sometimes even at great risk to their safety.
A Connecticut native living in New York has clocked over 25 million views on YouTube for his creative and quirky videos. Mixing college humour with news, Neistat and his brother get to the heart of local issues in engaging, catchy pieces. Later in 2012, Neistat took to his bike again to film downtown Manhattan and Staten Island after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the area. Neistat has moved somewhat mainstream of late following his online success.

This is just one of many citizen journalist examples, it just goes to show how easy it is to be a creator, and develop skills to be a journalist.
