What is remix culture?
Remixing is defined as the act of rearranging, combining, editorializing, and adding originals to create something entirely new. With the easy access to so many technologies today individuals are able to remix whatever they desire. I read an article that explained to me perfectly what remix culture is: “Re-thinking what we call original content”(Matt Jessell 2013).
But all I see nowadays is remixed original content. So in other words we live in a remix culture.
To see just how far people go in regards to remixing movies and to show a perfect example of remix culture in action, I typed into YouTube “what if Michael Bay directed” and a number of hilarious videos turned up. My favourite being “What if Michael Bay directed UP?”. For those of you who do not know who Michael Bay is; He is an American filmmaker whom is popular for his use of extreme special effects. Check it out below.
Here is the original trailer for Disney’s film “UP”:
This YouTube video shows just how easy it is for an individual to produce a new text from an original text. It is undeniable then, remixing is everywhere, and consequently almost everything is a remix nowadays.
