The media is everywhere. It plays a significant role in our daily routine, when the TV is on, when you switch on your radio and when you buy a newspaper. But why does it matter who controls it?
The question of the ownership in Australia is very interesting. It is clearly a known fact that Rupert Murdoch and Gina Rinehart own a major part of the Australian media. According to the SBS report: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2012/06/22/factbox-who-owns-what-australian-media Rupert Murdoch is in the process of offering to purchase James Packer’s share in Foxtel which would mean that he would own a substantial portion of the media in Australia. In the same report Gina Rinehart owns a majority of todays media. Owning close to 19% of Fairfax, Gina Rinehart is the biggest shareholder. She could use a takeover bid or the “Creep” option which allows her to purchase 3% every 6 months.
It means that all the significant newspapers in Australia are controlled by two very wealthy individuals, Rupert Murdoch and Gina Rinehart. They bring with them an overarching political ideology thus influencing their readers. Why do they want to influence their readers? How do they do this?
Why! Are they good people or do they only care for themselves, their self promotion and power.
Hal Urban’s book “Positive Words, Powerful Results” explains, “Particular words have a powerful effect. Certain words work like magic on consumers. For instance: You; Health; Safety; Guarantee; Discover. Words can portray a feeling, can twist the truth and make people believe certain ideology”. To follow, whoever controls the media, controls the information and thus what people perceive as reality. Why does it matter who controls our media!
Should we be worried!
